A documentary about my father, Stanisław Latałło, known for playing the lead part in “Illumination” by Krzysztof Zanussi. But he really wanted to be a director (his short fims, which how now achieved cult status, can be found on my channel “My father’s films”). He worked as a director of photography, among others with Tadeusz Konwicki on “So far, so close”, then became a cult figure for playing the main character in “Illumination” which won the Locarno Golden Leopard. He then accompanied the Polish Himalaya Expedition to Mount Lhotse in 1974, as a cameraman, and died there. He was 29, I was 7 years old. This film is a very personal reflection about him and his fate, with the participation of our family and close friends, and well-known figures of Polish Cinema such as Agnieszka Holland, Krzysztofa Zanussi, Tadeusz Konwicki, told by in the first person perspective by me, his son.

The film presents the story of a simple working-class Furman family. They have lived and worked for many generations in Łódź in a factory that once made this city the “Promised Land”, the capital of the European textile industry. After the fall of communism, members of this family lost their jobs and – at the same – time their place on earth. The French investment group renewed the ruins of the factory to open the largest shopping centre in Central Europe.

In the cinema version of the film for years, the director accompanied for five years those simple people who watched the changes taking place in contemporary Europe under their windows, while trying to preserve their dignity and find their place in a changing world. The cinema version tells the story of the City of Łódź and reveals the backstage of the creation of a great investment on a European scale.

Emil is a Polish teenager who travels to the city of Lodz to see his idol, the filmmaker David Lynch, because he read on the internet that Lynch is opening a film center there. In the train, Emil meets Dagmara, a young woman who tells him about the six degrees of separation theory – he knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody else…  you can reach anybody in the world. Dagmara has come back from abroad to look for a job, and she in turn meets Beta, who dreams to be a model and wants to travel… How far are these young people from their dreams?

This documentary portrayal of Krzysztof Warlikowski, one of the most important Polish stage directors, includes the remarks of the director himself, the accounts of his long-standing colleagues (among others, Jacek Poniedziałek, Stanisława Celińska and Maciej Stuhr), as well as the photos from rehearsals and performances. In one of the scenes Adam Ferency mentions ‘Warlikowski’s church’. Marcin Lattało is trying to look at this mysterious ‘institution’ from the inside.

The “Polish Poster School” is as widely known around the world as the Polish Film School. Beginning with the post-World War II era, the poster became a key tool for popular communication. In Communist times, the poster also offered colorful accents to an otherwise overwhelmingly gray public space. Ironically, during the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s (when several Polish graphic designers rose to worldwide prominence), the advertising of films was not a necessity. A frustrated and hopeless populace regularly relied on cinema for escape. It was in that time of massive unrest that artists like Julian Pałka, Jan Lenica, Roman Cieślewicz and Henryk Tomaszewski created the most expressive and unique images of the form. Marcin Latałło’s lauded documentary film is a double-layered construction, telling both the story of the movement and, in parallel, following the footsteps of Ania, a young designer who faces an extremely tricky challenge: she must create a poster for the film itself.

Mystery, entertainment, but above all an unusual portrait of an extraordinary city. “Łódź” (en. “boat”) that cannot float, there is neither river nor sea here. In his funny film Marcin Latałło wonders what happens when a sailor enters Łódź. His poetic journey is full of amazing discoveries – from factory chimneys, through tango to snails. The film also asks the question of what identity, memory, road and home are.

The title sailor is a man suspended between two worlds: memory and oblivion, facts and creation. He comes to Lodz – a city where there is no sea – to settle down… Will he find himself in the real world, and not just imaginary?
